Judge - Joanne Gregory
I have been an AQHA accredited judge for more than 20 years and have judged shows all around Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. I enjoy judging as I get to meet so many great people and have certainly made many friends along the way. I pride myself in completing a judging assignment and going away knowing I have been fair to all competitors no matter what level they are at. As we all know it is a different story judging out in the ring and judging on the sideline so I like to think I have done the best job I can do every time I judge.
I was introduced to western horses by a great gelding I used to look after and eventually purchased. I competed very successfully on him in all western disciplines taking him to a Superior All Round Horse Award. I then purchased a yearling appaloosa gelding that I also had much success with at all levels. One of the highlights of my show career is showing the 1999 Australian Appaloosa National Supreme Halter Horse. I won this title with a 5 month old filly that I bred myself. Presently, I like to compete in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Western Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation and my favourite class, showmanship. I have recently sold my older quarter horse that I have competed on for many years and have just purchased a yearling quarter horse gelding that I will bring through the young horse ranks over the coming years. I use a professional trainer to assist me as I work full time as a Performance Coordinator for a Defence contractor. My job sees me travel all around Australia and I do not have any time to ride during the week. I do have regular lessons every weekend as I believe everyone needs to keep learning and you can never know too much about our horses and showing.
I also run training days for people entering our western industry once a month. These have been very popular and seem to be growing every month. I have found there are a lot of new people coming into our industry and I like to give them a place to start out.
I am also the secretary of the National Pleasure Horse Association of Australia. We run the largest western horse show in the southern hemisphere with in excess of 300 horses competing over 5 days and paying out in excess of $65,000 in prize money every year. I am also the treasurer of both the Sydney Quarter Horse Association and the Australian Quarter Horse Association Amateur Division. These extra jobs keep me very busy in conjunction with my work and my own horse activities but I would not have it any other way.
